Visitors to your lab

Because of changes to Canadian immigration practices begun in February 2015, you are strongly advised to make arrangements for potential visitors well in advance of their visit.

Visiting Faculty

  • If international faculty visit for more than 5 days, there is an immigration process required.
  • If faculty from other institutions visit for more than 3 weeks, there must be a formal invitation.
  • If the faculty are visiting from outside Canada, it is essential that they arrange suitable health coverage.
  • Information is available on the Arts & Science website and on the Provost's website.
  • Letters of invitation must be signed by the Chair.

Visiting International Graduate Students

All international visiting students must meet certain criteria. These include:

  • The student must apply to SGS who will arrange immigration documents
  • The student must have UHIP coverage
  • The student must register at UofT as a full-time non-degree student and pay incidental and admin fees.
  • The student must be registered full-time at their home institution
  • The student must be proficient in English
  • The student must submit an application to SGS which includes the invitation letter and the completed and signed IVGSR form.

Letters of invitation must be signed by the Chair.


Unpaid volunteer positions are initiated by the individual offering their services and the supervising faculty member.

  • Please refer to the EHS guidelines for high school and undergraduate volunteers
  • There must be a letter of invitation detailing the terms and conditions of volunteering.
  • Letters of invitation must be signed by the Chair.
  • The University is not liable for volunteers and does not provide health or accident insurance coverage; it is the responsibility of the volunteer to obtain such insurance.
