Greenhouse Facilities

The Botany Department Growth Facilities at the Earth Sciences Centre have just completed a significant expansion, adding two new wings of rooftop research glasshouses. The Growth Facilities include over 50 plant growth chambers and rooms, and provide excellent support for plant research at the University of Toronto.

The Teaching Plant Collection, comprised of many specimens of botanical and human interest, is also located in glasshouses on the ESC rooftop. The collection is used to supplement a wide range of departmental courses and elementary and high school tours. Students are welcome to visit and explore the Collection between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday to Friday.

The Botany Growth Facilities are managed by Chief Horticulturalist, Bruce Hall, along with Horticulturalist Andrew Petrie. The Greenhouse Staff maintain the Teaching Plant Collection and grow plant material used in course lectures and laboratory exercises. They provide researchers with growth space, material, and advice, and have a wide range of knowledge and experience with plants that they are happy to share.
